Ukiyo House sits within a stretch of South Australia that has been quietly doing its own thing for a long time — a coastal town with deep roots, a community full of people making beautiful things, and a peninsula that rewards those who take the time to explore it.

Ukiyo House sits in Port Willunga — a small coastal town on the Fleurieu Peninsula, thirty-five kilometres south of Adelaide. It is, by any measure, one of the finest corners of South Australia. The ocean is steps away. McLaren Vale is a ten minute drive away. The hills, the vineyards, the producers, the beaches — all of it within reach, and none of it requiring much effort to find.

Port Willunga
Thirty-five kilometres south of Adelaide sits one of South Australia’s most loved stretches of coastline. Port Willunga’s yellow-gold cliffs, white sand and rich blue sea have been drawing people here for generations — for the caves, the shipwreck diving, the wooden pylons that peek through the surf. The Star of Greece for seafood. The Willunga Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings for everything else.
Fleurieu Peninsula
Port Willunga sits within the broader Fleurieu Peninsula — a stretch of South Australia that includes some charming neighbouring towns worth exploring. Victor Harbor, Normanville, Goolwa, Yankalilla, Rapid Bay. Pick strawberries, find a pastry at the Port Elliot Bakery, drive the Great Southern Ocean Drive, or spend a day walking in Deep Creek Conservation Park.
McLaren Vale
World-renowned wine region McLaren Vale is a short 14-minute drive away from Ukiyo House. Vineyards, producers and makers working carefully and quietly — the growers, the winemakers, the small operations doing things that we love. Definitely get the dumplings from the Salopian Inn.

Activities
Willunga Farmers Markets
South Australia’s first farmers market, running every Saturday since 2002 — rain, hail or shine. Local produce, Fleurieu growers, good coffee. An easy fifteen minutes from Ukiyo House and the best possible way to stock the kitchen for the weekend. 8am until noon at Willunga High School.
Wangkuntila–Aldinga Conservation Park
A short drive inland from the coast, Wangkuntila–Aldinga Conservation Park is a quiet pocket of native bushland — walking trails, birdlife, seasonal wetlands. A slower, greener counterpoint to the beach, and worth an unhurried morning.
Aldinga Reef
Just offshore lies the Aldinga Reef Aquatic Reserve — one of the best snorkelling and diving spots near Adelaide. A rare reef system, abundant marine life and colourful underwater formations. Worth getting in the water for.
Aldinga Beach
A long, open stretch of sand where the plan is no plan. Swim, surf, fish, or sit and watch the tide. Patrolled in summer, accessible year round, and the kind of beach you stay at longer than intended.
Port Elliot
Seventy-six kilometres south along the Fleurieu, Port Elliot is one of South Australia’s most loved coastal towns. Sheltered beaches, heritage streets, and a bakery with a reputation that precedes it. A good day trip, done properly.
Normanville
Known to locals as Normy, Normanville is a seaside town with long sandy beaches, reliable surf lifesaving patrols in summer, and more going on beneath the surface than most people expect. Start the morning at One Little Sister café, then walk the sand toward Carrickalinga or Lady Bay. The HMAS Hobart — scuttled in 2002 and now a declared marine reserve — is worth a look for divers. Seventy-six kilometres from Adelaide and a world away from it.
McLaren Vale
Forty-five minutes from Adelaide and on the doorstep of Ukiyo House, McLaren Vale is one of Australia’s oldest and most celebrated wine regions. Over ninety cellar doors, serious food, and some of the best views in South Australia. Cycle the nine kilometre Shiraz Trail through vineyards, farmland and gumtrees with the ocean on the horizon — then stop somewhere good for lunch. It would be rude not to.
Dining
& Drink
Aldinga Bay Café
Authentic Indian cooking on the Aldinga Beach esplanade — tried, tested and a firm favourite of ours. Family-run, genuine recipes and the kind of food that makes a beachside lunch feel like a proper occasion.
The Salopian Inn
One of the Fleurieu’s finest. The Salopian Inn works with the best local and seasonal produce, makes everything from scratch, and finishes the night with a homemade gin that earns its place on any list. A special occasion restaurant that doesn’t feel like one.
Russell's Pizza
Wood-fired pizza in the heart of Willunga, made with care and matched with a good wine list. Live music on weekends, dancing encouraged. The kind of local institution that deserves to be one.
Goodness Coffee Co.
Small-batch coffee roasted right here on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Pair it with a pastry or stay for brunch — either way, it’s a good morning.
Slow Food Kitchen
A relaxed café on Port Road with a menu built around whole, nourishing food. The coffee is excellent. The name says everything you need to know about the pace.
Pearl
Right at the water’s edge at the Aldinga Beach boat ramp. Future-friendly seafood, garden produce, local wine and beer. The kind of spot that doesn’t need to try hard because the view does half the work.
Our Place
A little piece of Italy at the top of Willunga Hill — and one of the most quietly beloved restaurants on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Handmade pasta, slow-cooked meats, freshly baked bread and recipes passed down through generations. Worth the drive up the hill.
Little Rickshaw
A tiny tin shed kitchen serving bold, confident Asian flavours — sashimi, eggplant chips, sorbets. A hidden gem that rewards those who find it. Check the Instagram if you need convincing. 24 Old Coach Road, Aldinga.
Fall From Grace
A neighbourhood wine bar that leans European — homemade pasta, small plates, weekly pizza nights and a wine list worth paying attention to. Aldinga at its most relaxed and most considered, all at once.
