Ukiyo House began with two people, a piece of land on the Fleurieu Peninsula, and a shared sense of what a place could be. There was no grand brief — just a shared belief to build something truly restorative. Designed in collaboration between the owners and Mountford Williamson Architecture – what followed was a slow, personal process shaped by love of beautiful things, a respect for the landscape it sits within, and an eye for detail that never quite switches off.
One half grew up third-generation Port Willunga. The other came from much further away, summers spent in a mudbrick house in West Bengal, shaped by family, land, and a way of living that leaves a mark. Together, those two worlds informed everything — the textures chosen, the objects gathered, the feeling the house holds.
The guiding principle was simple: that every detail should earn its place. Nothing chosen quickly. The gin bar carries locally grown citrus that has been dried by the owner. Nothing at Ukiyo House is accidental — and some of it is excessive in the best possible way. French linen bedding, Ergoflex mattresses, and a pillow selection that got slightly out of hand (one of the owners is a physio). Woollen blankets from Waverley Mills. A rainfall shower with a water blade, plus an outdoor shower with hot water for good measure.
